The Hydration & Renal Continuity Protocol

Renal (kidney) decline is a leading cause of mortality in senior Australian cats and dogs. Maintaining renal health is a forensic task of managing hydration and mineral intake. When a pet moves, the mineral content of tap water can change significantly, which may impact a pet with existing sensitivities.

We recommend specifying a 'Hydration Protocol' in your directive. This might include the use of filtered water, the addition of bone broth to meals, or the specific use of water fountains to encourage drinking. Furthermore, the directive should detail the pet's protein-to-phosphorus ratios in their diet, as managing phosphorus is the key to slowing the progression of kidney disease.

By providing the forensic history of blood results (SDMA and Creatinine levels), you allow the new guardian and their vet to establish a baseline immediately. This continuity is the difference between a pet that survives a transition and one that thrives for several more years under new management.
